Liver function tests are blood tests that measure different enzymes, proteins, and other substances made by the liver.
First and foremost the doctors recommend liver function tests. If the test results are worrisome then they might recommend you to undergo a CT or MRI.
Liver cancer is usually detected by MRI or ultrasound, however, one can have a blood test to look at the level of a chemical called alpha-fetoprotein (AFP). This might be higher than normal in some types of liver cancer. This might help to diagnose possible cancer or other conditions.
High protein levels in the blood can be caused due to viral conditions such as hepatitis and inflammatory disorders. One can also have high protein levels due to dehydration
A bilirubin of 20 or more on a blood test will be marked as high. Jaundice may occur when the blood total bilirubin reaches a level roughly between 35 and 50 micromoles/litre.
