They are an integral part of B complexes. The key difference between vitamin B3 and B12 is that vitamin B3 is important in controlling cholesterol and triglyceride levels in our blood, whereas vitamin B12 is important as a cofactor in DNA synthesis for both fatty acid and amino acid metabolism.
Deficiency of vitamin B12 is associated with multiple pregnancy related complications such as spontaneous abortion, recurrent pregnancy loss, small for gestational age (SGA), low birth weight (LBW), intrauterine growth restriction (IUGR) and overall weakness.
Pernicious anemia is one reason why B12 does not get absorbed in the body. The other reasons are lack of hydrocholoric acid in the stomach which can prevent B12 absorption.
All dairy products are a good source of Vitamin B12. In addition, one can include red meat once a week to boost vitamin B 12 intake
A serum vitamin B12 level between 200 pg/mL and 900 pg/mL is considered normal, however, values ranging between 300 to 350 pg/mL is recognised as a marker for a desirable status in the elderly.
