This test is used to find out if the developing foetus is at risk of genetic disorders and birth defects, such as Down syndrome or neural tube defects.
Alpha-fetoprotein (AFP) is a protein that is produced in the liver of foetus. During the development of the baby, some of these proteins may pass through the placenta and into the mother's blood stream.
This test help to measures the level of AFP during the second trimester of pregnancy. If the level of AFP is high or low in a mother's blood then this may indicate a birth defect or some other condition such as neural tube defect, Down syndrome, twins or multiple births.
Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)
How is the blood sample taken?
A tourniquet (elastic) band is placed tightly on the upper arm to take the blood sample. The patient is then asked to make a fist. This helps in the build-up of blood filling the veins, making it easy to collect the blood. The skin is cleaned before inserting the needle in the vein to prevent bacteria from entering. Needle is inserted into the vein of the arm and the blood sample is collected in the vacutainer.
Why do I need an AFP test?
As per the American Pregnancy Association, every pregnant woman should undergo an AFP test between the 15th and 20th weeks of pregnancy. The test is recommended for pregnant women, especially those who have a family history of birth defects, if you are 35 years or older and have diabetes.
What are the risks involved while taking this test?
There is only a slight risk involved while taking the blood for the test. You may feel little pain or bruise at the spot from where the blood is drawn, but these symptoms may subside quickly.
How does AFP test help?
An AFP blood test helps check for the risk of birth defects and genetic disorders in a developing foetus.
