Statistics reveal one in eight women develop thyroid problems during their lifetime. The thyroid, present in the front of the throat, releases thyroid hormones, T3 (triiodothyronine) and T4 (thyroxine) which are essential for optimal functioning of the body. Low levels of thyroid hormone in the body result in hypothyroidism, while excess amounts result in hyperthyroidism. Both of these disorders can affect the ability to maintain weight, regulate temperature, and carry out other body functions. While thyroid disorders are mainly treated with the help of medications, yoga is also known to improve the functioning of the gland. Here are 5 such yoga poses that may help improve the thyroid gland function:
Note: Perform these asanas under the guidance of a yoga expert. Those suffering from chronic diseases such as heart diseases, asthma, diabetes, or hypertension, must consult a doctor before performing these poses.
1. Halasana
Halasana, also known as the plough pose, helps in the proper functioning of the thyroid gland by compressing the area of the neck and thyroid. In this asana, you need to lie down flat on your back and try to bring your legs over your head.
2. Sarvangasana
Sarvangasana, also known as the shoulder stand pose, allows the compression of the thyroid gland, which helps in improving blood circulation and proper flow of thyroid hormones. In this asana, you need to lie on your back with your buttocks raised up, while placing your arms on the back for support.
3. Matsyasana
Matsyasana, also known as the fish pose, regulates the function of the thyroid gland and stimulates the thymus, a small gland between the chest. Stimulation of the thymus can help boost the immune system. For this pose, you need to lie on your back and then with the support of elbows and forearms, raise the chest and try to place the crown of your head on the floor.
4. Setu-asana
Setu-asana, also known as the bridge pose, is especially recommended to patients with hypothyroidism as it increases circulation to the thyroid gland. This asana should be avoided by pregnant women. For this asana, lie on your back, fold your knees and slowly lift your lower back off the floor. Make sure your chin touches your chest.
5. Bhujangasana
Bhujangasana, also known as the cobra pose, helps in improving breathing and increases circulation in the neck region, thereby enhancing thyroid activity. In this pose, you need to lie down flat on your stomach and lift up your head, chest, and shoulders, while keeping your palms on the floor.
While these yoga asanas may help improve the functioning of the thyroid gland, they cannot replace the conventional medicinal treatment. One must not stop the intake of their prescribed thyroid medications without consulting a doctor.
