The Blood group ABO and Rh factor test helps to determine the type of blood group and type of Rh factor. The Blood group ABO and Rh factor test is done: • In case blood or blood components transfusion is required • In case of blood or organ donation • In case of tissue or bone marrow transplantation • To determine the risk of Rh incompatibility with the fetus in a pregnant woman

faqFrequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

How is the blood sample taken?

To take the blood sample, a tourniquet (elastic) band is placed tightly on the upper arm. The patient is asked to make a fist. This helps in the buildup of blood filling the veins and it becomes easy to collect the blood. The skin is cleaned before inserting the needle in the vein in order to prevent bacteria from entering. The needle is then inserted into the vein in the arm and the blood sample is collected in the vacutainer.

Why is it important to determine the Rh factor in a pregnant woman?

It is important to determine the Rh factor in a pregnant woman to protect the pregnant mother from Rh incompatibility. If a mother is Rh-negative and the father is Rh-positive, chances are that fetus might be Rh-positive as well. In that case, the body of the mother can develop antibodies against the Rh antigen. These antibodies can cross the placental barrier and destroy the red blood cells of the fetus resulting in hemolytic disease of the fetus.

What is a universal donor?

Universal donor is a person whose blood can be used for transfusion to any person as they have type O, Rh-negative blood. The antibodies are not formed against this blood group with the Rh-negative factor. Thus, there is less risk of occurrence of a hemolytic transfusion.

What is a universal recipient?

Universal recipient is a person who has type AB, Rh-positive blood. These persons can receive blood from any person as their body recognizes the A, B, and Rh antigens as self. Thus, there is no risk of serious hemolytic transfusion.

Are there any other type of red blood cell antigens apart from ABO and Rh?

Yes, apart from ABO and Rh, the surface of red blood cells contains antigens such as Duffy, Kell, Kid, and other Rh antigens.
