Lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) test helps to detect conditions that are responsible for causing tissue damage. Examples include diseases of the liver or blood. It helps to monitor the progress of tissue damage and determines prognosis. It is also used to evaluate response to cancer treatment and body fluids other than blood. How is the blood sample taken?

To take the blood sample, a tourniquet (elastic) band is placed tightly on the upper arm. The patient is asked to make a fist. This helps in the buildup of blood filling the veins and it becomes easy to collect the blood. The skin is cleaned before inserting the needle in the vein in order to prevent bacteria from entering. The needle is then inserted into the vein in the arm and the blood sample is collected in the vacutainer.

What is lactate dehydrogenase?

Lactate dehydrogenase is an enzyme. It is mainly involved in the production of energy. It is found in cells of heart, kidney, liver, muscles, lungs, and blood.

What are the symptoms of meningitis?

The symptoms of meningitis are cold hands and feet, a high temperature, confusion, vomiting, pain in the muscle and joints, breathing quickly, spots or a rash, pale skin, headache, stiffness in the neck, sleepiness, and seizures.

How LDH helps in detecting tissue damage?

Normally, a small amount of LDH can be detected in the blood. However, in case of tissue damage, the LDH is released into the blood from the cells. Thus, a high level of LDH in the blood indicates tissue damage.

How LDH helps in detecting fluid accumulation in the body?

In case of injury or inflammation or infection in a specific area of the body like heart, brain, or lungs, there is an accumulation of fluid or the constituents of the fluid will change. The level of LDH in such cases helps to determine the cause of accumulation of fluid.
