This test is used to monitor the amount of lipase present in the blood. The test for lipase is often used to monitor and diagnose acute pancreatitis. Sometimes it may also be used to monitor and diagnose chronic pancreatitis and other disorders involving the pancreas. Pancreas is a vital organ that is located in the abdomen. It converts the food we eat into fuel for the body's cells. The pancreas has two main functions - helps in digestion and regulation of blood sugar. An enzyme, secreted by the pancreas, lipase helps in the breakdown of food in the stomach. If there is an injury/infection/disease the function of the pancreas may be impaired, which may lead to increased or decreased production of lipase. This test is also used in the diagnosis of various other conditions such as pancreatic tumours, cysts, etc.

faqFrequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

How is the blood sample taken?

To take the blood sample, a tourniquet (elastic) band is placed tightly on the upper arm. The patient is then asked to make a fist. This helps in the build-up of blood filling the veins and it becomes easy to collect the blood. The skin is cleaned before inserting the needle in the vein in order to prevent bacteria from entering. Needle is inserted into the vein of the arm and the blood sample is collected in the vacutainer.

What other conditions cause serum lipase to be elevated?

Lipase levels are usually elevated in acute pancreatitis. But the lipase levels may also be increased in conditions like kidney failure, cirrhosis, or a bowel problem.

What drugs cause high lipase levels?

Drugs like birth control pills, codeine, morphine, thiazide diuretics, etc., may cause high lipase levels.

What are the symptoms of pancreatitis?

The symptoms of pancreatitis include: Abdominal pain that radiates to your back, abdominal pain that feels worse after eating, indigestion, fat in stool, nausea or vomiting, loss of appetite, fast heart rate, weight loss, etc.
